This coming week will see daytime highs climb to near 20°C on several occasions. This Thursday's record high is just over 18°C (set in 1987), and we could break it
After a ton of snow to start the month and then unusually cold weather, we are about to have a heat wave.April heat is no surprise, but where it gets interesting is the foot or two of snow that's still on the ground. It's not unusual to have this much snow left in April; several times in the last ten years, we've had more. However, this much heat and sun may not melt the snow - it will sublimate it.
Sublimation is when water changes directly from a solid to a gas. This process is crucial because it could help reduce the flooding that this much snow would normally cause as a liquid. We will start Monday with clouds, but skies will partially clear as daytime highs climb to 14°C on a southwest breeze. Tuesday brings a mix of sun and cloud, but a cool northwest wind will keep temperatures near 12°C in the afternoon. Inland locations could be a degree or two warmer.
The much-advertised heat arrived in the middle of the week. Sunshine returns on Wednesday, along with a southerly wind that will help push daytime highs to near 20°C. The sun and the heat hang on Thursday and Friday, with temperatures at least in the upper teens. My answer is - get that BBQ ready because we are about to lose all our snow!
