PC Leader Dennis King, centre, makes a seniors' health-care announcement in Clyde River on March 9 in the home of Helen MacPhail, left, and Donald Docherty, PC candidate for New Haven-Rocky Point. - Dave Stewart/SaltWire NetworkNEW HAVEN, P.E.I. — The future of the overdose prevention site on Belmont Street in Charlottetown became the focus of a PC party news conference on March 9 that announced plans to help aging Islanders live at home longer.

The building at 33 Belmont St. was set to be renovated and ready by spring. Peers Alliance was awarded the contract to operate it. “Before we say definitely here, I think we need to have that good community consultation and an educational understanding of the services that will be offered, what it looks like how it integrates into the community,’’ King said. “This isn’t a facility that you can bring out to a potato field in rural P.E.I. It’s going to take a conversation.’’

Several provincial election candidates spoke at the event, turning the night into an improvised debate on a single issue. Political hopefuls included all candidates for Charlottetown-Victoria Park: Incumbent Karla Bernard, Barb MacLeod, Joe Byrne and Keizer, running for the Green, Liberal, NDP and PC parties, respectively.
