On his way out the door, Portman says he’d like to deal with retirement security, China security and jobs legislation, among other priorities.

Portman outperformed former President Donald Trump when they were on the ballot together in Ohio, and Portman said he’s been regularly lambasted by his constituents for both supporting Trump too much and not backing him enough.

After Trump encouraged his supporters to march on the U.S. Capitol as part of his effort to overturn results of the 2020 presidential election, Portman released a statement that said it was “inexcusable” for Trump to encourage the rioting mob, and that “he bears some responsiblity for the tragic violence that occurred.” He said he voted against impeaching Trump because he’d already left office and impeachment only applies to current officeholders.

“There were a lot of good things going on under President Trump,’ says Portman. “The policies were working. The way in which the COVID vaccines were developed with Operation Warp Speed was also historic. Frankly, he should have taken more credit for all of that rather than focusing on the 2020 election.”

Portman says he doesn’t plan to run for public office again, let alone seek the White House himself, but he wouldn’t rule out serving in a Republican presidential administration if he’s asked. In retirement, he says he plans to work on initiatives to promote civility and public service. He also plans to spend time engaging in outdoor pursuits like bike riding, hunting, and working on his farm.
