A handful of Ohio Republicans in Congress joined Democrats to support federal legislation that would enshrine protections for same-sex and interracial marriage amid concerns that those rights could be threatened in the future.

U.S. Reps. Mike Carey, R-Columbus, Mike Turner, R-Dayton, Dave Joyce, R-Chagrin Falls, and Anthony Gonzalez, R-Rocky River − who is leaving Congress after this term − joined all Ohio Democrats in passing the bill. The U.S. Senate approved it last week with the support of Sens. Sherrod Brown and Rob Portman, who co-sponsored the measure and helped secure the votes needed to clear the Senate.
