For Holtmann, that means coaching up a new-look roster featuring five freshmen and three transfers, to go with a sprinkling of returning players whose names might escape you. On one hand, competing outside the white-hot spotlight might prove advantageous for a young team still trying to find its footing. Less exposure means less pressure. But operating in the shadow of football also makes it more challenging for the Buckeyes to break into the Columbus sports conversation.
“Things pick up with the Big Ten season, that’s my experience here,” Holtmann said, adding that his goal is to make November and December more interesting for fans by scheduling “some type of high-profile program.”
