We couldn't be prouder of our own Juanita Mercer being nominated for the E. Cora Hind Award for local reporting. Her ongoing investigation into pay equity in N.L. and the political will to enact long overdue legislation is nothing short of exemplary. 🙌

The Telegram/SaltWire Network reporter Juanita Mercer has been named a finalist for a National Newspaper Award for her work highlighting the gender pay gap in Newfoundland and Labrador.

However, the public conversation about that commitment quickly fizzled. Many people probably assumed the work was done, or that the government was at least working on drafting the legislation — something every other Atlantic Canadian province has had for decades. The Telegram/SaltWire Network reporter Juanita Mercer started covering the legislature when she returned from maternity leave in 2022. March 15 was the first day of the spring sitting, and the opposition critic for women and gender equality, Progressive Conservative MHA Helen Conway Ottenheimer, asked the Minister of Women and Gender Equality, Pam Parsons, whether she would commit to bringing pay equity legislation to the House during that sitting.

New to the political beat, Mercer was surprised the province lagged so far behind regarding pay equity. When the press gallery gathered to decide who they’d scrum with after question period, Mercer said they should talk to the minister and the opposition about pay equity.https://www.saltwire.

From that day until the end of the year, Mercer was steadfast in shining a light on the issue. She filed numerous access-to-information requests, thoroughly researched the topic, consistently followed up on interview requests, built trust with local advocates, sought out expert opinions, and kept the topic in the newspaper throughout the spring and summer. She did this while also reporting on many other important political matters as The Telegram’s only political/legislative reporter.
