Moving away from pay review process would take UK 'back to 70s', minister claims
Mr Wallace indicated that the Government was holding firm on its position despite Mr Nowak’s warning, insisting ministers are not prepared to ignore the pay review bodies and that it is now up to the unions to talk to their employers directly.
“They used to meet in Downing Street and tell the Labour government of the day what they’re going to do. We’re not going to go back to that. We’re not going to be held to ransom.” Responding, Mr Nowak called for direct negotiations on pay. “The Government is trying to use pay review bodies as a human shield. There is nothing stopping ministers from negotiating directly with unions to resolve these disputes. This has happened in Wales and Scotland,” he said.
