It is understood the decision to cover their legal costs was taken by the Government

Liberal Democrat deputy leader Daisy Cooper said: “Johnson and Hancock should use the £1.5m of celebrity fees they have received since leaving their posts in disgrace to fund their own legal advice.

“It is an insult to the millions of families who suffered because of the Conservative Government’s catastrophic mistakes during the pandemic. and after-dinner speeches could be used to pay for their own legal support given they aren’t ministers anymore. A source close to Mr Hancock said: “When called to give evidence to the Inquiry, Matt will do so as a DHSC witness, giving evidence under the umbrella of DHSC and supported by DHSC accordingly.“Matt continues to support the Covid Inquiry and he’ll continue to meet all the deadlines. Matt has already handed over his phone and given full access to all his emails and text messages, when requested by Parliament.
