On your screen, just as you are ready to hit play, another alluringly packaged option beckons, forcing you to restart the process all over again.
I know this because of the long list of half-finished shows and flicks in the “Continue Watching” row on Netflix, a testament to my diminished powers of concentration.There used to be no better moment in my weekend than Saturday when, like a salmon returning to spawn, I would find myself at Sam the Record Man on Barrington Street, fanning through the record stacks with the intensity of a card player perusing a hand of High Chicago at the old Greco-Canadian Social Club.
The written word brings solace from the buzz of life. Even there the availability of choice can fog the mind. At this pace, before long, we will be hitting the remote every few seconds, as our Pavlovian need for constant, ever-changing stimulation deepens.
