CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Juanita Hughes didn’t expect her life to take a drastic turn in November 2014 when she and her husband visited a walk-in clinic due ...

With her kidneys failing, fluids began to accumulate throughout her body, from her lungs down to her feet and legs. She required dialysis the next day, a treatment she has been receiving since then.On Sept. 10, Hughes was part of a group of more than 50 people participating in the annual Charlottetown Kidney Walk at Victoria Park, an event organized by the Kidney Foundation of Canada to raise awareness about kidney disease.

Reflecting on her diagnosis, Hughes noted that when she got the news, she wasn't – and still isn't – diabetic. She didn't have high blood pressure or show any other signs of kidney disease. She was only in her 40s then. The money will go towards supporting the foundation's programs and services, including providing short-term financial assistance to patients and their families.

She was glad to see the turnout for the event and its contribution to raising awareness about kidney disease.‘A beautiful support system’ Juanita Hughes had her family by her side at the event, from the left, her son Brett, her husband Scott, and her daughter Ashley. They all showed up early and helped with the event's organization. - Thinh Nguyen/SaltWire
