Three unanswered goals in the third period made the difference in Montreal on Saturday night.
Goals by Julien Gauthier, Drake Batherson, Austin Watson, Shane Pinto and Derick Brassard along with a solid effort from goaltender Mads Sogaard allowed the Senators to sweep their season series against the Habs for the first time in franchise history.
“In the third period, we talked about getting pucks behind them and checking. We didn’t check hard enough in the first two periods and i thought we did a really nice job.” Senators general manager Pierre Dorion is weighing options on whether to buy, sell or stand still to see if this group can get to the post-season. A strong effort by Alex DeBrincat in the Montreal zone set up Pinto for his 15th of the season. After missing on his own golden scoring opportunity, DeBrincat found Pinto alone in front and he redirected the puck by Montembeault to tie it up at 13:51 of the second period.Article content Not long after Michael Pezzetta nailed Erik Brannstrom with a thundering body check, Watson stepped up in defence of his teammate.Brassard, playing career game No. 997, opened the scoring at 15:12. He was able to tip a shot by Nick Holden from the point by Montembeault after Mark Kastelic won a draw in the Montreal zone.
