Three unanswered goals in the third period made the difference in Montreal on Saturday night.

Goals by Julien Gauthier, Drake Batherson, Austin Watson, Shane Pinto and Derick Brassard along with a solid effort from goaltender Mads Sogaard allowed the Senators to sweep their season series against the Habs for the first time in franchise history.

“In the third period, we talked about getting pucks behind them and checking. We didn’t check hard enough in the first two periods and i thought we did a really nice job.” Two goals in a span of 47 seconds earlier in the third had given the Senators control. Batherson’s 18th of the season, at 5:18, made the score 4-2 lead. Earlier, good work by the fourth line in the Montreal zone led to Watson’s fifth of the season.

Through 40 minutes, this wasn’t the Senators’ most inspiring effort, but they went into the third period tied 2-2. Earlier, Montreal defenceman Mike Matheson showed a good burst of speed while going to the net. picking up a rebound of his own shot and beating Sogaard on the second attempt. Ottawa defenceman Thomas Chabot needs to do a better job than he did in that situation, which allowed the Habs to tie it up 1-1 at 4:29 of the second period.
