Forecasts show that the average family of four in HRM is going to spend more than $16,000 this year on food, a $1,000 increase over last year.

The average rate of household food insecurity across HRM is 18.6 per cent as compared to an average of 15.9 per cent across Canadian provinces. - Postmedia file“It’s tough times out there,” said Leticia Smillie on the state of food insecurity in HRM these days.

Part A of the plan, which Halifax regional council endorsed last week, comes with 56 recommendations. Plan B will involve a “significant budget ask” which will be coming back to council later this year, Smillie said.“While the region has a rich history of food production and self-reliance, we also have the dubious honour of being one of the highest rates of food insecurity across Canada,” Smillie said.
