Sufian Chowdhury of Charlottetown sets Atlantic record, misses national mark by week

“I'm very happy, that's great news,'' Chowdhury said about almost becoming the first permanent resident in Canada to join the Armed Forces."Hopefully, this will send out a message to apply for other ."The native of Bangladesh, who moved to Canada with his wife, Tasnuva Afrin, 10 years ago as an international student, said joining the navy is the latest step in his effort to become a bigger part of the community.
Petty officer second class David MacPherson, senior recruiter at HMCS Queen Charlotte, said accepting applications from permanent residents is a big policy change for the Armed Forces. “One of the reasons why I stayed was the chance to play cricket,’’ said Chowdhury, adding that he has played on the provincial cricket team. “When I was growing up back home, that’s what we play. Despite the months of snow and cold , I love it.’’He set up his own electronics business in Charlottetown, S&A Electronics, but wanted to do more.
“When I was a kid, my father always wanted to put me in the army cadets. From Grade 6, I was in boarding schools to be trained and educated for cadet college.’’So, when he saw the opportunity to be a naval reservist and that his sight wouldn’t be a problem, he jumped at it.Playing cricket.Solving people's problems as an electronics technician.Chowdhury said being a naval reservist will give him the perfect balance between civilian and army life.
