Democratic Senate candidate McDermott's for-profit podcast company has accepted advertising dollars from companies that do business with the city he oversees, creating a situation that ethics experts say could encourage companies to pay for influence.
could become an issue on a larger stage. McDermott plans to continue the podcast, of which he says he is 28% owner, should the relatively unknown mayor beat Republican Sen. Todd Young for a U.S. Senate seat on election night., believes accepting dollars from advertisers will affect McDermott's personal judgment, even if only subconsciously. From a campaign finance perspective, the federal laws surrounding podcasts are murky. Generally, the media is exempt from campaign finance law restrictions. That's been applied to candidates' radio shows, said Brett Kappel, a campaign finance expert at Washington, D.C.-based Harmon Curran..
