About 200 people, almost all opposed to the city's latest Lansdowne proposal, gathered Wednesday to share their concerns.

I was surprised when a young man who identified himself as Patrick stepped up to the microphone at Wednesday night’s public forum on the Lansdowne 2.0 proposal and spokeMind you, the Let’s Talk Lansdowne forum and information session at the Horticulture Building — organized by the Glebe, Old Ottawa South and Old Ottawa East community associations — was anything but a debate.

“If you don’t want towers,” he added, “then I would suggest ending exclusionary zoning city-wide and allowing for small apartments on every single lot in the city. Until then, we need to build density, and we need to build it in nodes. Every time we try to build in this city, someone says we need intensification where it makes sense, and thus nothing gets built.

But the opposition that Patrick and Missy faced Wednesday became even more evident when Old Ottawa South Community Association board member Laura Urrechaga, who had earlier given a very even-handed and open-minded explanation of the changes to the plan, was drowned out at the end by chants of “We want the park” and “No taxpayer money.” Incidentally, the shouts took place as she was describing how complex the issue is and how “we must all find a way to discuss this in a respectful way.

Then there’s the whole issue of whether the $419-million project should be a priority now, and what it might really cost. In that regard, it was too bad that Wednesday’s information forum wasn’t a real debate.
