After nearly three years of negotiations, a deal between the P.E.I. government and P.E.I.’s private and non-profit long-term care homes is close.
After a three-year negotiating process, the P.E.I. government and private long-term care facilities are close to reaching a funding deal. - FileCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. —
Representatives of community care homes and long-term care homes have informed SaltWire Network that, as of March 10, new funding deals with the province are close to completion but have not been fully finalized. Ramsay Duff, CEO of the MacLeod Group and a member of the Nursing Homes Association of P.E.I., said long-term care homes have reached an agreement in principle. Individual homes must finalize and sign the agreements with government.
At that time, King also said he believed the province needs to “invest more in government-owned long-term care facilities.”Private community care homes and nursing homes negotiate separate funding agreements with separate departments. The Department of Social Development and Housing sets community care per-bed funding rates while the Department of Health sets nursing home per-bed funding rates.
Duff had publicly said private and non-profit homes received 47 cents for every dollar publicly funded long-term care homes received. This has hindered the sector’s ability to retain trained staff. But Villard confirmed the community care sector has been facing similar struggles with staff retention.
