'All these beautiful images, these beautiful photo shoots with flower crowns, subconsciously led me to assume that pregnancy was easy,' says one Vogue writer as they unpack the effect social media has had on the concept of pregnancy.

Earlier this year there was an Instagram story prompt that asked people to share photos of themselves pregnant. I can’t remember the exact wording, but I do remember the profound ambivalence I felt while tapping through these different-sized baby bumps—the tiny swells of the first trimester to the watermelon-sized growths of the final days.

I was also extremely depressed and anxious for the first half of that pregnancy. I had gone off antidepressants to conceive. I will never know for sure if the hyperemesis caused my mental health to crater, or if it was the hormonal onslaught of the pregnancy, or both. Either way, it was not a time I particularly wanted to document.

, said their own experience of pregnancy was altered by social media. “All these beautiful images, these beautiful photo shoots with flower crowns, subconsciously led me to assume that pregnancy was easy, or that it was a beautiful process day in and day out,” one mom told me. When that didn’t turn out to be the case for her, she felt like there was something aberrant about her.

Most of the momfluencer research focuses on women currently experiencing pregnancy or in their early motherhood years. But I wonder if there is another layer of meta-experience. When I have spoken to academics who research social media, I always ask them if they are studying the effects of our looking back at the past so frequently.
