A developer discusses Assassin's Creed Mirage.
The long-awaited Assassin's Creed Mirage finally arrives later this year, ushering in a new era for the franchise. The Ubisoft title follows Basim, a character originally introduced inVahalla, and traces his backstory throughout ninth century Baghdad. Mirage aims to return to the series' roots, presenting a shorter, story-focused experience.
Simon Arsenault: Very early on, as soon as we set our eyes on the Middle East, we started looking at other cities. Of course the traditional ones from AC 1 came back like Jerusalem and Damascus, but whenever we were searching for those we would always find references to Baghdad. And it was so unique, like you stumble on drawings that shows you around a city fortress, and it's almost too good to be true. So we had to explore it at one point, we needed to go check what was there.
And you mentioned the old-school stealth as one of the pillars. What parts of stealth did you feel were most important in terms of making this feel like an older Assassin's Creed game in that regard? And you kind of touched on this a little in that answer, but how would you describe the freedom that players have in terms of how they play out the same story?
Simon Arsenault: It was a love story for us as well. Like, I started in the industry and Assassin was coming out, the first one, and it revolutionized the open worlds, the climbing that gave you freedom. It was kind of the beginning of the open structure as well, and that formula improved over the years. So for us as designers, it was already a love letter.
