Wegovy weight loss drug - what is it, who is eligible to use it and when will it be available in UK?
Semaglutide, also known as Wegovy, has been hailed a “game changer” and is reportedly popular with celebrities in the USA. The drug, manufactured by Danish firm Novo Nordisk, is an appetite suppressant which is delivered via a weekly injection.
Who is eligible to use the drug on the NHS? Thousands of people will be eligible when the drug becomes available on the NHS. It is to be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, Nice said. It added that its conditions for the NHS offer represents “value for money for the taxpayer”.
When will it be available in the UK? There are reports of shortages of the drug due to its growing popularity, but the manufacturer is said to be ramping up production to meet the rise in demand. Novo Nordisk said in a statement that it was working to get the drug to the UK “as soon as possible”. Alex Miras, professor of endocrinology at Ulster University, said: “This decision made by Nice is a pivotal moment for the treatment of people living with obesity.”
