Houston folks who haven’t caught Dimitri Reeves doing his street act likely will soon enough.
He works on a different corner in Houston most every afternoon, moonwalking through busy intersections as he lip syncs to a Michael Jackson tune, then spinning on a dime and dropping into the splits during a James Brown number.
“ told me that riots were going on, then looked and said, ‘Are you thinking what I’m thinking?’” Reeves recalled. “I was so scared, but people suddenly stopped throwing things and started to watch. Because how could you get mad when someone’s performing? The riot police stopped marching down the street and started watching the show. It changed the whole atmosphere.
“Everyone raise your hand and repeat after me: I promise...to love myself…and respect myself…because when I look this good…anything is possible!” The crowd repeated it back enthusiastically. Reeves, who is originally from Maryland, has been traveling the country performing on street corners. Between songs, Reeves takes time urging people to love one another, and says his goal is to spread positivity and love in the world. On any given day since arriving in October, Reeves could be found at intersections around Houston.
“That was the best thing that ever happened to me, because when I got back home I had nothing to fall back on. That fear forced me to become confident, because when you have nothing to lose you just go for it,” Reeves said.
