A downtown hardware store owner is blaming an increase in vandalism and harassment for having to close his shop after nearly 90 years.

The fed-up owner of Dudley’s Hardware Paint & Decor, located on Church St. near Wellesley St., shared the news on the“Due to the complacency of this neighbourhood to allow this ‘noise’ to continue in Barbara Hall Park and on the steps of the 519 every day, the fate of Dudley’s has unfortunately been sealed. This will be our last year,” Steve Dawson wrote.
The hardware store sits adjacent to Barbara Hall Park and The 519, a community centre that mainly serves the LGBTQ community. The park and the front steps of the centre have been a gathering place for people dealing with drug addiction and mental health issues.Article contentResidents living in the area voiced their concerns online following the news of the store’s pending closure.
“I live down at Church and Alexander and I love this neighbourhood but after being harassed once at night and once during the day walking by The 519 I just avoid it all together,”
