The Whistler Film Festival screenwriting lab encouraged the filmmaker to mine her own experiences for her first feature.

What emerged after she accepted the idea that her past could inform her future film was a potent story of agency.

In November, Jules and Asivak were named to the Hollywood trade magazine Variety’s and the Whistler Film Festival’s 10 Canadians to Watch list. “The amount of talent that submitted was immense! I wanted to pick so many films to share and honour that hard work,” said VWIFF programmer Tristin Greyeyes in an email. “At the end of the day, what it came down to was making sure we had enough representation from all walks of life to ensure this festival gave a platform for those voices we want to uplift.”Article content
