Cape Breton Regional Fire Chief Michael Seth announced his resignation via social media last Wednesday. IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POSTSYDNEY, N.S. — The mayor of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality is denying the resignations of the regional fire chief and a municipal L’nu adviser within the same year both have any connection to alleged anti-Indigenous sentiment at city hall.
“I have had a wonderful relationship with Chief Seth and talked to him even after he had resigned,” McDougall-Merrill said. “But there’s no hiding that there’s been some contention between some members of council — it has been said publicly. But I was not privy to everything because I was not implicated in that investigation.”
“Because you can talk the talk, you can say that you want it. But if you don't follow through, it's tokenism; it's just marking a box and saying we did it.” “I know myself I have a great relationship with the chiefs, with the many members of our wider community, which always includes Membertou and Eskasoni,” reiterated McDougall-Merrill.
Michael Seth, CBRM's director of regional fire and emergency services, confirmed his resignation on social media. IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POST FILE - IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POSTSeth’s complaint arose from a June 2022 email chain involving the naming of Canada Day celebrations in CBRM as the “Night of Lights” by the municipal recreation department. Some councillors who disagreed with the naming decision said they were unfairly called racist in the exchange.
