In the wake of ongoing protests against police violence and systemic racism, the University of Florida is putting an end to its 'Gator Bait' chant at sporting events due to the racist history behind the phrase by MattRyanPerez
's Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia that portray Black babies being used as bait for alligators.
Similarly, student athletes at the University of Texas at Austin are calling for the ban of the campus' anthem,"The Eyes of Texas."Chief critic The use of the phrase at the University of Florida stems from Lawrence Wright, who said,"If you ain't a Gator, ya Gator bait, baby" after defeating Florida State in 1995. Wright told The Gainesville Sun, “It’s not about what happened way back in the past. How about our culture." He added, “I created something for us. It’s a college football thing. It’s not a racist thing, It’s about us, the Gator Nation. And I’m Black.
