The former walk-on from Loyola High, who made the move to nickelback this season, had two interceptions in the Bruins’ victory over San Diego State last week
Defensive back Alex Johnson had his “dreams come true” in UCLA’s 35-10 victory over San Diego State as he produced a career night Saturday.
Johnson moved back to the nickelback position this season and was responsible for two of Aztecs quarterback Jalen Mayden’s three interceptions at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego. Johnson was able to capitalize on the pressure the Bruins’ front seven applied to Mayden near midfield, forcing him to carelessly throw the ball out toward Johnson and the receiver he was defending.
Nick Pasquale was a redshirt freshman walk-on receiver who wore the number for the Bruins in 2012 and 2013 before his death in a car accident. Pasquale had seen his first game action a week before his death in September 2013. “Getting to where the number 36 is a great honor,” Johnson said in April. “I get to wake up every day and put it on. … I think this program has a great history of walk-ons who come every day, put in the work and don’t complain. I think it’s a great message that should continue. We have a whole group of walk-ons that do it every day and you won’t hear a word.”
