The trial of Georgia’s criminal case alleging Donald Trump and 18 co-defendants conspired to overturn the result of the 2020 presidential election is estimated to last four months, a lawyer for the prosecution said.
Nathan Wade, a Fulton County prosecutor, also said at a hearing Wednesday that the state had about 150 potential witnesses lined up. The four-month estimate didn’t include jury selection or time for any defendants to testify.
The estimate came up at a hearing in which Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee is weighing requests from two defendants — attorneys Sidney Powell and Kenneth Chesebro — to split their cases off from the main prosecution. Both of them argue they can’t a fair trial as part of a group. No date for the trial has been set, but the district attorney has asked to start the proceeding on Oct. 23 to meet Chesebro’s request for an expedited trial. Trump, the Republican frontrunner for the 2024 presidential election, has said he’ll ask to split his case from any defendants who seek expedited trials.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who brought the indictment on Aug. 14, is fighting to keep the defendants together for trial as she attempts to tie all members of the group to a “criminal enterprise” to keep Trump in office after he lost the election.
