On this date in 1808 Charles Fisher, a future New Brunswick Father of Confederation, was born. He was only 29 when he entered colonial politics in what would become the province of New Brunswick. Fisher was an important reformer who advanced education and electoral reform between 1854 and 1861. Later, he was a delegate to the Quebec and London Conferences that led to Confederation.
With the Dominion of Canada established, Fisher was elected a Liberal MP in the first Parliament. He stepped down, however, in 1868 when he was appointed to the New Brunswick Supreme Court. Fisher would remain on New Brunswick’s highest court until his death in 1880 at age 72.Dictionary of Canadian Biographyis an accomplished public historian and award-winning journalist.
