When Thor and Iron Man merged into the Iron Hammer, it finally fixed Mjolnir. The hammer's short handle was caused by Loki, but an engineer like Tony Stark could never abide wielding a weapon with such a major design flaw.
Marvel's Iron Man and Thor are quite different in terms of powers, abilities and backstory, but the two characters are often paired up in fights - and occasionally, the two become one. Tony Stark's science and Thor's magic mixes together in Infinity Wars #3, and as is the case with other"amalgamated" characters, the best elements of both are taken to form the Iron Hammer, a superhero combined as a result of Gamora's machinations with the Infinity Stones.
In Norse mythology, Thor's hammer did not possess any magical properties and couldn't anchor itself to the ground at all. It was simply a war hammer that was so physically heavy, only Thor himself could lift it. The enchantment of Odin was added by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby when they brought the character to the Marvel Universe. However, Mjolnir's usefulness as a weapon was mitigated somewhat by its small handle.
In both the Norse legend and Marvel continuity, Mjolnir has quite a short handle, and can only be realistically wielded with one hand. This naturally puts the wielder of the hammer at a great disadvantage; to strike a foe, one must depend upon their own arm's reach instead of the weapon's and put themselves in harm's way.
If Iron Hammer is a true amalgamation of Thor and Tony Stark's minds, then the elongated hammer would be an obvious fix. Tony Stark would never allow such a visible flaw to appear in his primary weapon - at least a perceived flaw. Regardless of the person responsible for fixing the hammer, the fusion of Iron Man and Thor allowed for a longstanding Marvel mistake to be rectified. .
