HALIFAX, N.S. — At the end of March, a request for proposals for development of Blockhouse Hill in Lunenburg will close. And Mayor Matt Risser says there has always been the intention of sharing those plans with residents before any approvals are given. Some residents say there hasn’t been enough consultation or transparency throughout the process. They’re also asking for a plebiscite or a public meeting over the plans. Risser says there’s always an opportunity to improve communications.
Paula Rennie: I'm not saying that everything Council decides should be up for a plebiscite. We don't want to subject that or ourselves to, always running to council. But on a decision of this magnitude, and given that the public appears to have been unaware of the change in legislation, it is really incumbent on town, the town council and the mayor to speak to us directly.A Lunenburg resident was talking about the plan being developed during COVID.
I'm on the public record as saying the next 25 years for towns, it's going to be densification or dissolution. So in Lunenburg, we're really trying to take the approach of densification and we need to densify as Lunenburg because you know the external demand.
Sometimes you have to keep RFPs private for proprietary reason. But what I can tell you is that the whole purpose of this project is to get designs to submit to the public. So, I know there have been calls for a public meeting, but it's kind of pointless to do a public meeting until you know what you're talking about in the sense of having a design that is being proposed.
