'These days, it’s become common for dancers to wear it at powwows. And we are seeing a resurgence of the paint being worn by Natives fighting new battles in the war of survival for our people.' –RuthH_Hopkins
. Because of all this, we are secretive about our ways and hold them close to our chests. Even now, we see aspects of Native identity reduced to caricatures and our sacred rites abused.
We follow ancient instructions that our ancestors gave their lives protecting. That’s not to be taken lightly. If we stop practicing these ways, they will disappear forever. These ancestral instructions are our birthright, and we are their living, breathing legacy. But in order for our culture to continue, it must adapt and grow. Our ancient Indigenous languages, cultures, and beliefs have a firm foundation, but they must evolve with us as Native Nations. It is good and right for us to use them in ways that promote the values of ancestors but go beyond what they may have originally intended.
We should be encouraging and embracing Natives who use paint to express themselves — for adornment, to derive strength, to promote unity, to bond with one another and their heritage, and to fight for what’s important. The act of painting oneself, as a Native, is spiritual in and of itself. People love to tell stories about the warriors of old. They were brave indeed. But in 100 years, they will be telling new stories of those who paint their faces, earn their feathers and show valor here and now, on the battlefields of today, in the streets and on Capitol steps. You are Mother Earth warriors putting your bodies in the path of fossil fuel giants, fighting climate change, and taking a stand against the police state and those who promote inequality. You are medicine.
