“People are putting down student journalists who are just starting and learning the craft.”

she experienced as a student in her hometown of Pickerington, Ohio, 21-year-old Tandanpolie was told to return to journalism school — which she found ironic as aJ-school student. She brushed it off, but had initially felt a pang of disbelief and fear. “It's not that I didn't expect any of that. It's just that it had been so long after the story came out,” she says. “I really sat and thought it through. It didn't mean enough, so I moved on.

Being told to have a “thick skin” or “suck it up” isn’t helpful advice, especially for students with less experience. Sarah Nichols, president of the Journalism Education Association, reminds her high school journalists to respond professionally — if they choose to respond in the first place. When trolls badger her students, she asks them if they want to set community standards, either by removing hateful comments or writing explanations.
