“I think that’s what we’re after,” Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis said about the way New Jersey rebuilt its team following a 4-2 loss to the Devils in the preseason opener Monday night at the Bell Centre. “It takes a little time. It’s what you do with that time. We want to be patient, but we’re going to have aggressive patience. We’re not just going to wait for it to happen. But yeah, that’s what we’re chasing.”The No.
Caufield and Hughes were linemates with the U.S. Under-18 team the season before they were both selected in the first round of the 2019 NHL Draft. Hughes had 34-78-112 totals in 50 games that season with the U.S. team, while Caufield had 72-28-100 totals in 64 games before being drafted 15th overall by the Canadiens.
The Canadiens had their last four first-round draft picks in the lineup — David Reinbacher , Juraj Slafkovsky , Logan Mailloux and Kaiden Guhle . They also had Justin Barron and Alex Newhook, who were both first-round picks of the Colorado Avalanche — in 2020 and 2019, respectively — before they were acquired by the Canadiens.“You can’t really keep up with him,” said Mailloux, who performed well for most of the game for someone playing for the first time in a Canadiens uniform.
