The Warriors’ bewildering start to the season has been a tale of two teams.
All six of the Warriors wins have come at Chase Center this season as they sported a 6-1 home record entering Friday’s game against the New York Knicks. But Golden State has yet to win a game outside the Bay Area. The team’s 0-8 road record is the Warriors’ worst start away from home since the 1989-90 season when they didn’t win away a road game until mid-December.
Coach Steve Kerr isn’t surprised by the Warriors’ success at Chase. He said that stems from having an engaged fanbase, which helps create a real home-court advantage. “I’m actually much more interested in why we’re not playing well on the road than why were are playing well at home,” Kerr said pre-game Friday. “I expect to play well at home. We’ve got a good record here over the years and good players, great fans. No reason we shouldn’t control our home court. But we got to start putting it together on the road, too.”
Scoring hasn’t been an issue for the Warriors, regardless of where they are, especially with Stephen Curry on the floor. But they haven’t been able to get enough stops to stall their opponent’s momentum and silence the home crowd. The Warriors are allowing an average of 124.3 points per game when they’re playing away from Chase. Meanwhile, they give up an average of 111.6 at home.
Kerr was especially fired up after the Warriors’ 130-119 loss to the Suns Wednesday night that wasted a 50-point gem by Curry. He said the team has been played “scattered” and failed to execute on both ends of the court. He also took accountability for the Warriors’ road woes, saying, in part, that it’s on him to get the players to buy in to the process and commit to each other and winning.
