Stampeders expecting crowd of 25,000 for Saturday's game against Roughriders CFL

After a disappointing season opener that saw the Calgary Stampeders draw fewer than 18,000 fans to their aging venue, the team is anticipating a solid bounce-back for this weekend’s matchup with the Saskatchewan Roughriders .Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary Herald, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.

“Certainly way better than our home opener,” said Jay McNeil, the Stampeders vice-president of business operations. “Yeah, our home opener was disappointing and I’m not making any excuses, but Thursday nights are challenging. Thursday nights in June are particularly challenging for a family-friendly entertainment option. Kids had to go to school .

Playing on a Saturday afternoon helps, too. Nobody has to rush home or worry about going to bed too late when they’ve got work in the morning the way they do on a Thursday.Article content But the Stamps also have their Fan Fest happening on Saturday after it was postponed in May because of forest-fire smoke. The newly revamped Stamps House should be packed, there’s live music and, ultimately, what’s promising to be a highly competitive football game.

“It’s what we’ve been asking for,” McNeil said. “As an organization, we’ve been asking the CFL for a game in the summertime on a Saturday with the Riders and we finally got one. The number is trending significantly ahead of the home opener and what we’ve seen over the past few years is the closer you get to the game, the gameday sales increase significantly, especially when the weather’s great. So far, the forecast is looking good so we’re hoping to surpass 25,000.
