Is Davis Schneider a one-trick pony -- or he is for real as a great big league hitter? There is no way of knowing yet.
And it wasn’t that long ago that the 24-year-old Schneider spent parts of six minor-league seasons in either rookie ball or class-A baseball.
Before this season, he’d never hit more than 16 home runs in a season. This year, between the Jays and the minor leagues, he has 28. And honestly, where would the offensively challenged Jays, with so many injuries and so many other issues, be without him this close to the end of the season? Schneider’s beginning with the Jays is not dissimilar to that of Bo Bichette — except that Bichette was expected to be a star almost from the time he arrived in Toronto. He hit .376 to Schneider’s .403 in a similar number of at-bats, with one more home run and five fewer RBIs.Advertisement 4This season is still young for Schneider and late for the Jays. No matter how he turns out long-term, his big league start in Toronto will never be forgotten.
