The Buffalo Bills have won 47 games the past four NFL seasons. But they have yet to have a great playoff run.
The Bills lost that game, having been outcoached by Bill Parcells and a lesser-known defensive coordinator named Bill Belichick. And then that great Bills team with Kelly, Thurman Thomas and Bruce Smith would lose the next three Super Bowls — none of which were close.
The year before, they lost in overtime to Kansas City in a playoff game that still defies explanation. Allen, having passed for more than 4,000 yards most seasons while running for close to 800 yards himself while scoring seven touchdowns a year, is almost impossible to defend. It’s not really the last great shot for the Bills, but keeping rosters together in the NFL is an annual challenge. McDermott and management have to find a way to keep this team together, to make the salary cap work, to maintain Stefon Diggs at receiver, to stay healthy and fortunate.
