The latest chapter of Dandadan gets back to what made the manga so successful and captivated readers in the first place: Yokai possession.
Dandadan from Shonen Jump is finally resuming a neglected trope that originally captivated readers in the first place: Yokai possession.
Part of Dandadan's charm is the randomness that inundates its 40 chapters. There really isn't a major villain that the manga's heroes Momo Ayase and Ken Takakura aka Okarun must defeat except for ambiently placed malicious yokai and perverted aliens that haphazardly strike at the most inopportune times to steal certain body parts. But there have always been possessions, which allow the host to transform.
Readers have yet to witness how the possessed Jiji will terrorize Okarun and Momo. It's unlikely that Momo will be able to restrain Jiji's spiritual parasite like the way she does with Okarun, as her latent abilities just recently awakened, and she can't fully tap into her full power. Momo already has trouble controlling Okarun, let alone two possessed people.
In addition to his stunning artistic portrayal of yokai in general, mangaka Yukinobu Tatsu has proven that his strong suit includes the ways in which he depicts how yokai powers manifest and how their forms change as parasites. He is also quite apt at capturing the relationships that transpire from these possessions. Unfortunately, Dandadan had been experiencing a brief lull in this particular department as there hadn't been any such transformations for quite some time.
