One of the unfortunate byproducts of increasing food inflation is the kids who are going hungry, and that's a bad recipe for their future health and ours ...
I know about the Nova Scotia chapter for policy alternatives through their alternative budgeting process. They look at the provincial spending plan through both an economic and a social lens and far too often in our province, the gap between the haves and the have-nots is growing. More and more people are relying on the support of food banks and other programs to exist and those programs are now struggling to meet demands from people who are being crushed by the price of everything these days.
Here we are decades later, and we still have kids in our country who don’t have enough to eat. Or they have food that isn’t nutritional and healthy. In the context of rising inflation, we are seeing the numbers levelling off a bit. March’s inflation rate was just over four per cent year over year.
And that is starting to show up in the demands of organized labour in Nova Scotia, and across the country. The days that a two percent increase will cover the cost-of-living increases are long gone and that puts more pressure on the private sector. Their workers are going to be demanding more and that puts pressure on companies to increase prices to make up for inflation.Op-ed Disclaimer
