As summer sets in the ice on the rivers is fading fast allowing tourists and recreationists to enjoy the pleasures of our local river systems.
Published: May. 31, 2024 at 6:02 PM AKDTFAIRBANKS, Alaska - As of this week, the Nenana and Salcha River s are completely open and ready for adventure.
Last week large portions of the Nenana and Salcha Rivers still had areas of ice, as did many other rivers throughout the state. That ice has all but disappeared in Alaska which means almost all areas of the rivers are now navigable in relation to ice obstructions. This includes the Nenana and Salcha Rivers which are frequented by interior residents, and especially tourists for the Nenana River.
Given the good news about the ice, on May 31, the Denali Raft Adventures company announced on Facebook that they will be starting their season of operation on the Nenana River. In other words, those that dare the rapids of Denali will be able to do so. You don’t have to do so with the Denali Raft Adventures company however, anyone with the right water craft, skills and safety equipment will now be able to brave the rapids at their own risk.
Here in Fairbanks however, we’ve seen some rain storms that could raise the water level on the Chena River if they continue and grow in frequency, duration and precipitation. So far, these storms have not had a major impact on the water levels of the Chena River, so far allowing boaters of all kinds to continue their recreation. There was a small increase to the river’s water levels but those are currently leveling out to the same height seen in recent weeks.
