As break-up season comes to an end, boating activity on the Chena River is coming back despite lower water volume in the river.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - As break-up season ends, boaters and other aquatic adventure seekers are seething to hit the water around the interior. Thankfully for those that are seeking out such recreation, those opportunities are opening up as the rivers open up as well.
Some residents have been taking motorized boats on the Chena River despite some boaters laying claim to areas of ice in some spots on the Chena River. Additionally, there are some shallow spots and the United States Geological Survey shows a lack of volume in the river. As of May 17, the USGS determined the discharge or volume of water flowing to be lower than normal for this time of year. It currently measures out to 1,640 cubic feet per second. The gage height came in at 1.43 feet.
On the Tanana River, there has been little boat activity comparably, but there USGS considered the volume to be standard at 19,000 cubic feet per second. The gage height on the Tanana River measured in at 18.78 feet. To the east, the Salcha River is showing a discharge of 2,490 cubic feet per second with a gage height of 7.31 feet.Parents, newborn son stuck abroad after baby was born 3 months early
