BREAKING: Rishi Sunak sacks Nadhim Zahawi for ‘clear’ breach of ministerial code.
Nadhim ZahawiIn a letter, the Prime Minister wrote: ‘It is clear that there has been a serious breach of the Ministerial Code.Mr Zahawi paid multi-million pound settlement – estimated to be around £5million – with HMRC when he was Chancellor and in charge of the UK’s tax policy last year.
Mr Zahawi insisted he ‘acted properly’ and his ‘error’ over shares in the YouGov polling company he co-founded was ‘careless and not deliberate’.‘Clearly in this case there are questions that need answering,’ the prime minister said after Labour called for an independent investigation into the Cabinet minister.
The Tory chairman remained in his post while the probe was carried out, but he has now decided to jump ship. On Saturday, Mr Zahawi released a statement saying questions were raised about his tax affairs while he was being appointed chancellor. ‘Following discussions with HMRC, they agreed that my father was entitled to founder shares in YouGov, though they disagreed about the exact allocation,’ he said.
