Why is the BBC cronyism enquiry being run by a man with deep family ties to the Tory Party? ✒️ KateMaltby for ipaperviews
that a cronyism scandal is being investigated by a man whose family is at the heart of the Tory party. But the bigger problem is that he simply doesn’t have the remit to conduct the investigation that this scandal deserves.
Sunak’s decision to refer this scandal to the Commissioner for Public Appointments looks like a diversionary tactic. With his limited powers, Shawcross can discredit the DCMS committee and blame the Civil Service for a political sin. Or he can whitewash the entire process and allow Sunak to declare the matter closed, leaving Richard Sharp in place – and facing a revolt by angry staff at the BBC.
