Review: Wartime play a harrowing, emotional tale of two families' shared path yyc

The Sakamotos have invited the MacLeans to dinner at their Medicine Hat home but before the audience can join them, Mitsue Sakamoto and Ralph must tell us their respective stories. The genius of Kanagawa’s play is that these surprisingly parallel stories are told almost simultaneously until that promised dinner takes place.

The second act recounts the horrors Mitsue’s family endured being housed first in livestock pens in Vancouver and then in a chicken coop in Alberta. At the same time, Ralph and his friends are captured and sent to a POW camp ruled by a sadistic commander named Kato , whose counterpart is the widow Mrs. Rutt , who owns the farm where Mitsue and her family are allowed to work like serfs for a pittance. These scenes are uncompromising in their brutality and inhumanity.

Griffin Cork and Yoshie Bancroft detail their characters’ inhumane living conditions in Forgiveness at Theatre Calgary. Courtesy, Moonrider ProductionsMost of the actors in the supporting cast play multiple characters and those switches are entirely credible proving this is ensemble acting at its finest. In one scene, an actor plays the oppressed and, in the next, an oppressor.

Forgiveness has been lovingly and meticulously staged and directed by Stafford Arima, who has family connections to the Second World War war and Canada’s internment, ensuring it’s a powerful evening of theatre. But, as Kanagawa stresses in his playwright’s notes, this is a work in progress but any perceived shortcomings are dwarfed by what has been achieved.
