Vertigo Theatre announces new mystery season filled with premieres yyc yycarts
For the Christmas season, Vertigo is mounting Sleuth which premiered as a play in 1970 but was twice turned into a film, the last one starring Michael Caine and Jude Law.Vertigo’s holiday show will be the old British chestnut Sleuth by Anthony Shaffer that premiered in London in 1970 at the St. Martin’s Lane Theatre where it stayed for a record-breaking 2,359 performances.
Calgary actor/director and artistic director of The Shakespeare Company, Haysam Kadri, will direct the world premiere of Calgary playwright Arun Lakra’s new thriller Heist for Vertigo’s Jan. 27 to Feb. 25 slot. Lakra’s earlier mind-twisting, sci-fi play Sequence won the Betty Mitchell, Calgary Theatre Critics and Joanne Woodward/Paul Newman awards in 2013 for best new play.
Another film adapted for the stage is The Girl on the Train starring Emily Blunt. It gets its Canadian premiere with Vertigo Theatre.Grinhaus will step into the director’s chair for The Girl on the Train, Vertigo’s March 16 to April 14 offering that is a Canadian premiere.
Vertigo’s 2023/2024 season will end with a new comedy mystery, Ms Holmes and Ms Watson – #2B by Kate Hamill, the prolific American playwright whose adaptation of Little Women that Theatre Calgary used for its holiday show last year. This is billed as a feminist twist on the Sherlock Holmes stories told in a post-pandemic world, making it modern, funny and nail-biting.
