Rugged, dark-hued pieces tended to join many components, from simmering, tribal grooves and insistent, Morse code-like rhythmic appeals to snippets of plaintive melody and surging passages that somehow felt anthemic and esoteric at the same time. Saxophonist Jason Rigby was a commanding presence, a lead singer of sorts who surrounded and enveloped chords with his luscious, breathy sound as much as he played directly on them.
