concert could hardly have been more different. First up was the Chopin Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor, music of pastels and scented lace, with occasional flashes of light. After intermission came the 10th Symphony of Shostakovich, music sonically ranging from dim grays to great assaults of raw colors.
The Polish conductor Krzysztof Urbański was the guest on the Meyerson Symphony Center podium. Music director of the Indianapolis Symphony from 2011 to 2021, he has also held positions with orchestras in Europe and Japan. The piano soloist was Jan Lisiecki, a Canadian of Polish descent.Shostakovich composed his 10th Symphony in the months after the 1953 death of Joseph Stalin.
In a performance gripping start to finish, Urbański strategically plotted every detail of pace and dynamic. From electrically charged pianissimos to fearsome explosions of brass and percussion, and everything along the way, there was an unbroken thread of urgency. The orchestra gave its considerable — indeed, enormous — all.
Wind groupings weren’t quite fine tuned in a couple of spots, but what eloquent contributions were lent by Daniel Hawkins , Gregory Raden , Erin Hannigan , David Buck and Ted Soluri .
