Five retirees of the Bexar County Jail, with a combined 131 years of service, express their concern over the county's failure to address the issue. The problem began when the Jail Standards Commission changed the way inmates are monitored over 15 years ago.
The retired Captain from the Bexar County Sheriff's Office explains that the new direct supervision style requires detention officers to constantly monitor inmates in their assigned areas. Additionally, the county's decision to buy out over 100 deputies' positions a decade ago has resulted in a shortage of manpower, putting a strain on jail supervisors
