Lawyers sent a letter warning Bexar County warning them of jail conditions and overtime requirements of employees.
"It was referred to as a direct supervision style," said Carlos Santiago a retired Captain from the Bexar County Sheriff's Office. "The supervisors are the bad guys. We've had lieutenants just quit crying because they're so frustrated and getting tired of being yelled at. Because you got to stay. I can't stay. You got to stay. How much stress does that put on you? You know, and I've had two lieutenants quit crying, saying I can't do this," said a retiree.
A fact not lost on Commissioner Tommy Calvert and Commissioner Grant Moody who have asked since January for an agenda item on this issue to be included in the county’s agenda. "It's an issue of fairness, we think that those detention deputies deserve the time they've earned. And when they can't take that time because of the situation, at the jail on the fact that they're, you know, doing mandatory forced overtime, then, you know, I feel we have an obligation, out of fairness to make sure that they keep that time," Moody said.
"It's important on public safety, you know, for our community whether it's law enforcement or making sure our court system and our jail are properly functioning it's important for those detention officers to make sure that they have a quality of life that they deserve and that their families can manage but it's also a financial issue when it comes to all the overtime costs at the jail because we are not properly staffed and we have, you know, this mandatory forced overtime...
