The Ottawa Redblacks, who have won just twice in their past 25 home games, say this team is different. This is the 2023 Ottawa Redblacks.
“I’ve got zero doubt this team is different. One game does not make us. Watch us and see the fight. The offence, obviously, didn’t jel . But there wasn’t any quit. Teams that struggle, teams that don’t believe in themselves, don’t usually fight and claw until the very end. And we will fight and claw.”
It makes sense. It’s not fair to compare this year’s team to last year’s or the year before that. But for fans, long-standing frustration doesn’t differentiate. As the losses have stacked up, so has the fan anguish. “You look at a sport like golf; it’s frustrating because you spend so many hours at it and the difference between winning and losing could be an inch or a millimetre in the head angle of your driver or wedge,” Behar said. “Then you look at football, which can be so frustrating because you sweat, you bleed, you have bruises up and down your side and you leave feeling unfulfilled if you don’t get the win.
While recent history can’t be erased, the Redblacks need to get the ball rolling. One win, maybe that leads to another … and another.
